A better me by Gary Barlow
This book is about a man's struggle to get himself together and fight back depression. However simple it is to express this within only one line, the actions required are far from being simple.
I did not know who Gary Barlow was before. I knew, vaguely, about Take That.
It was his eyes that caught my attention and I am happy that I gave this book a try, cause it worth every single minute spent reading.
It is a book about struggles, fame, coping with losses, and dealing with mental health issues. It is a book about grit, human connections, and love. Last and not least, it is a book about finding your way into healthy food and cooking.
3 main ideas I took away from this book:
a. celebrate your achievements cause they are the result of your work
"My only regrets are always based around not properly celebrating my achievements"
p. 209
p. 209
b. there is so much to learn about dealing with other people's grief/pain/struggles
"It's ironic, isn't it, that in your darkest hour no one really knows what to do with you (...) I could see no end to this grief"
p. 222 ( on the loss of their fourth child)
c. once you developed a good habit (being eating healthy food/ reading/ exercising, you name it), stick with it
"I have to keep tight control, I never want to go back. It was a life lesson back there and I respect it. You've got to have your mind in gear all the time. Our human default is one of laziness and greediness. It takes no effort to be lazy and greedy. Making the right decisions requires effort and sometimes some soul-searching. It isn't easy"
p. 287
